Stop deformation in animations(Solved)

So I am doing a simple character based game for school. I don't have a lot of experience but I have my model ( a simple knight like character with shield and sword made in Maya), some simple animations from the standard assets and a basic script to control the character. My question is how would I go about making it so that my shield does not deform when my character runs around? Is there a setting or some sort of layer mask, or would I have to go through and change it manually in the animator? Or is there another way?
